First Edition Octavo Print Gallery


These fine Audubon lithographs come from Birds of America, the Royal Octavo Edition (1840-1844). The paper size for these prints is approximately 6.5 x 10 inches. These are all authentic first edition prints completed under the direct supervision of John James Audubon himself. This edition was lithographed and hand colored by J. T. Bowen.

The most distinguishing feature between the first edition and later ones is the background tint that J.T. Bowen added to later editions. In addition, most first edition prints used italics for the artist credits across the bottom whereas the later editions used block lettering for the credits.
